Colbert slams Eisenhower for failing to kill ‘Moon Hitler’

Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert said Thursday that he’s finally pinpointed the moment America started heading downhill: when President Dwight Eisenhower (R) passed on a plan to drop a nuclear bomb on the moon.

A report out last Sunday detailed the preposterous-sounding, Cold War-era plan American military planners hatched to impress and frighten Russia. If it sounds like something out of a sketch comedy show — well, amazingly it actually is. However, the foolhardy idea didn’t go forward thanks to Eisenhower’s judgment and the advice of late astronomer Carl Sagan, who argued against it. (Read more…)

So, why exactly is Colbert so miffed? Because America apparently failed to kill “Moon Hitler.”

“We were going to nuke the moon and we didn’t!” he said. “This is earth-shattering news, when it should have been moon-shattering news. Folks, this moment is when America stepped back from greatness.”

“Sure, Ike beat the Nazis, but what about the Moon Nazis?” Colbert asked. “Oh, they don’t exist? That’s just what Moon Hitler wants you to believe. We chose lunar appeasement, and it has just emboldened the moon. I swear, last week that thing was half the size.”
