A judge in Florida allowed the birth certificate of a baby girl to include the names of three parents — two married women and the sperm donor, reported Reuters.
After trying fertility clinics a few times, married couple Maria Italiano and Cher Filippazzo asked Italiano’s hair dresser to provide his sperm via artificial insemination.
But there was never a written agreement. (Read more…) Before the birth, the donor, Massimiliano Gerina, decided he wanted a parental role, which kicked off a two-year dispute.
While all three are now listed on the birth certificate, they do not have equal parental rights. The judge’s decision means that the couple will have “sole parental rights” and Gerina can visit but “will not be expected to provide child support,” according to Reuters.
Gerina told the Daily Mail, “It is a kind of a modern family, but I’m very old style. I believe that kids should have both a male figure an a female figure.”
