Is CNBC itching for a riot? Emails suggest network looking for ‘angry’ town hall event

Just how orchestrated is the media’s coverage of the health reform issue? If a series of emails between Tea Party activists are to be believed, at least one network — CNBC — is intentionally seeking out angry confrontations to report on — and giving anti-reform activists the chance to arrange the confrontations beforehand.

As first reported by Zachary Roth at Talking Points Memo, Jenny Beth Martin, the national coordinator for the Tea Party Patriots, sent out a group email on Tuesday stating: "We have a media request for an event that will have lots of energy and lots of anger. This is for CNBC."

To which Tea Party activist Pat Wayman responded with an email stating the date and time of a health reform town hall to be held by Georgia Democratic Congressman David Scott. "This one is going to be a riot! Literally…"

Then Wayman pointed out that Rep. Scott, who is black, was the congressman whose office sign was defaced with a swastika on Tuesday.

Wayman also linked to the source that provided her with the details for Scott’s town hall — a right-wing extremist group called the Georgia Patriotic Resistance. That group’s Web site lists the details for four Georgia health care town halls, all held by Democratic members of Congress.

"Question: Are CNBC producers also in contact with Democrats and progressives in planning the news channel’s town hall coverage, or just the Tea Party?" asked media watchdog group MediaMatters in a statement on its Web site.

The Gawker blog didn’t wait for an answer to that question: "So. There you go," writes Pareene. "Maybe we should all join Bill O’Reilly’s fight against GE! It actually really is a pretty shitty corporation!"

Copies of the emails between Martin and Wayman can be found here.
