Marriage equality goes into effect in Maine

Steven Bridges and Michael Snell were met with a different kind of wedding reception early Saturday morning.

“We didn’t expect all the cameras and everything tonight,” Snell told WCSH-TV and other media outlets gathered at City Hall in Portland, Maine.

Snell and Bridges walked across the aisle and into the history books at 12:20 a. (Read more…)m. Saturday, becoming the first same-sex couple to become legally married under the country’s new marriage equality initiative, which went into effect at midnight.

The happy couple won the right to marry when state voters passed Question 1 on Nov. 6. Clad in matching shirts saying “Love is love,” Bridges and Snell ended up being the first couple in line to get their license.

“We finally feel equal, and happy to live in Maine,” Bridges said.

The two men and the couples getting married after them were met outside the building by a cheering crowd, as a band celebrated the occasion by playing The Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love.”
