U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID) has admitted to taking “several shots of vodka” before his arrest for driving under the influence in the early morning hours of Sunday, Dec. 23. According to the Alexandria General District Court documents obtained by the Del Rey Patch, Crapo admitted to police when he was pulled over that he had consumed the shots in the hours before taking the wheel. Police pulled the 61-year-old senator over at around 12:45 a.m. after they observed his car running a red light. Officers noted a smell of alcohol on Crapo “which became stronger as he spoke.” The senator was exhibiting slurred speech and erratic behavior. His eyes, wrote the police, were “bloodshot and watery.”
“The driver indicated that he consumed several shots of vodka hours earlier and did not consume any more alcoholic beverages since,” said the police report.
Crapo was taken into custody “without incident” after failing roadside sobriety tests and breath analysis determined his blood alcohol level to be .11 percent. (Virginia’s legal limit is .08 percent.)
The Republican issued an apology on Sunday evening, saying, “I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter. I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated.”
Crapo is an adherent to the Mormon faith and previously stated he abstained from consuming alcohol.
