Chipotle pulls Utah Boy Scouts sponsorship over gay ban

Chipotle Mexican Grill has withdrawn its support of a Boy Scouts event in Utah due to the organization’s ban on gay members.

“We believed that terminating the sponsorship and remaining consistent with our policy was the right thing to do, and we have reinforced our policy with the team that makes these decisions to try to prevent similar issues in the future,” the restaurant chain told ThinkProgress on Tuesday.

Chipotle planned to provide the Utah Boy Scouts with $4,200 worth of coupons for their annual “Scout-O-Rama” event, according to the The Associated Press. (Read more…) The restaurant chain has sponsored the event in the past.

ThinkProgress noted the sponsorship appeared to directly contradict Chipotle’s charitable giving policies. The company has vowed not support charity groups that discriminate based on sexual orientation.

The Boy Scouts have faced increasing pressure to drop their anti-gay policy.

The Boy Scouts of America considered lifting its ban on gay members and leaders in January. However, citing the “complexity of this issue,” the Boy Scouts’ executive board decided to delay a vote on repealing the ban until May.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2000 that the group was allowed to prohibit gay members under the First Amendment, which guarantees the freedom of association.

U.K. police hope to sniff out pot growers with marijuana-scented cards

Thousand of houses in the United Kingdom are being sent marijuana-scented “scratch and sniff” cards in a new bid to track down marijuana growers.

In a press release, the charity group Crimestoppers explained the cards were designed to educate residents about the smell of marijuana. They hope once people can recognize the smell of cannabis plants, they will be able to help law enforcement officials identify illegal growing operations.

“The Crimestoppers campaign will help members of the public to recognize the signs and smell of a cannabis farm. The police will use the intelligence generated by the campaign to help build on recent successes in tackling this issue,” said Andy Bliss of the Association of Chief Police Officers.

“We also know that many people don’t realize that the empty, run down house or flat on their street with people coming and going late at night may actually be a commercial cannabis farm. It’s not just the stereotype of the remote rural set or disused industrial estate unit.”

The green-and-black cards also provide other signs to look out for, including homes that have “visitors at unsociable hours” or buildings that generate an excessive amount of heat. Homes with closed blinds should be under suspicion as well, according to the leaflet.

BBC News noted that the Netherlands was the first to use marijuana-scented cards to track down growers.

Not surprisingly, the Crimestoppers’ new campaign was met with hostility from advocates of marijuana legalization.

“As for the cost of the campaign in product development, design, distribution and publicity…you would think that there were more serious crimes being carried out that needed public focus, and ones that more members of the public actually come to trouble because of. How to catch a Banker perhaps? That won’t help the police keep their budget though – catching peaceful and non violent cannabis consumers is a fair bit easier,” Greg de Hoedt of NORML UK wrote in a blog post.

Massachusetts sheriff defends joking about Obama’s assassination

A sheriff in Massachusetts is refusing to apologize for joking that President Barack Obama could best serve the country by being assassinated.

Plymouth County Sheriff Joseph D. McDonald, Jr. made the joke during a local St. (Read more…) Patrick’s Day breakfast for Republicans on Sunday. He said that the ghost of Lincoln appeared to Obama in a dream and advised him to go to the theater, where the former president was shot in the head.

“It was absolutely in jest,” he told The Patriot Ledger. “It was a joke. It wasn’t a new joke by any means.”

McDonald claimed it was “absurd” to be offended by the joke because it had existed since the late 19th century.

“The basic concept of it has been around since the Andrew Johnson administration,” he explained to Patch. “The radical Republicans wanted him to take a much harder line on Reconstruction of the South, and the joke was that Johnson should have gone to the theater instead of Lincoln.”

McDonald also accused liberals of hypocrisy, saying he heard similar jokes told about former President George W. Bush.
