Did Sex With Plants Drive Human Evolution?

In the African forests we were shoving the hormone rich sex [reproductive] organs of plants into our mouths everyday for millions of years…Each containing a level of biochemical complexity off the charts that influenced DNA transcription, pineal gland activity, and so on.

Trees were like drug dealers on the corner competing for attention. The most attractive, delicious, and nutritious fruits were the ones chosen, with the plants reward being seed dissemination; thus securing their survival down the evolutionary timeline. For the organism doing the ‘oral sex’, this biochemical cocktail, which we are only just beginning to understand, was quite literally involved in building and fueling the brain on a sub-cellular level for eons. Is illicit use of hallucinogens in fact a part of normal behavior? Healthline reports:

A new study shows that an estimated 32 million people in the U.S. (Read more…) have used LSD, “magic mushrooms”, or mescaline at some point in their lives, many in the recent past.

Researchers Teri S. Krebs and Pål-Ørjan Johansen of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology used data from a sample of more than 57,000 individuals ages 12 and older who were questioned for the 2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

According to Krebs and Johansen’s study, the rate of lifetime psychedelic use was highest among people ages 30 to 34, with higher rates in men than in women. The authors also found that older adults were more likely to have used LSD and mescaline, whereas younger adults were more likely to have used “magic mushrooms.”

In our experience, people are surprised about the high rate of psychedelic use in the U.S.,” Krebs said.

In a study published in the Journal of Breath Research Thursday, Olof Beck, of Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet, detected drugs on the breath of 47 patients at a drug addiction emergency clinic.

“Considering the samples were taken 24 hours after the intake of drugs, we were surprised to find that there was still high detectability for most drugs,” Beck said in a statement. He suggested that a breath test could be given at the scene and then confirmed with a blood test later.
