From the Editor’s Desk: Thanks for Your Support, Disinfonauts

Dear Disinfo readers,

With the passing of 2012 – and all of us survivors still recovering from our obsidian knife wounds from December 21 – I wanted to take a moment and thank you all for the unbelievable patience and support that you’ve shown me here.

I’ve been a fan of the Disinformation Company for many years, and coming to work here has been both a dream come true and a huge responsibility. Preserving the Disinfo legacy while preparing for its future is a balancing act, and one that I cannot do without you. (Read more…) The community here has shown incredible grace and good humor as I work to find a good mix of controversial, entertaining and just plain odd content. You’ve been forgiving of my missteps and experiments (may we all remember with a mix of fear and amusement the last weeks of 2012 as The Era of the Midnight Video  Onslaught), and in short, you’ve made me feel at home while I’ve learned the ropes.

I would be lying if I told you that there won’t be further missteps in the future, but I hope that there will also be times of wonder, bewilderment and illumination ahead. I want to do my very best to entertain you and make your visits here worthwhile. I’ve gotten to know many of you as friends – and a few as valuable noble adversaries – and with this in mind, I hope to repay your confidence in spades.

My “door” is always open, and I’m always eager to hear from you with story ideas and other matters of importance. I’d also be delighted if any of you are interested in contributing content to the site.  Feel free to email me any time you like at matt AT disinfo DOT com.

Once again, thank you very much for the kindness and patience you’ve continued to show “the new guy”.

Most sincerely,

Matt Staggs

Living with Bipolar Disorder: Andy Behrman’s ‘Electroboy’

The Disinfocast with Matt Staggs: Episode 05

Andy Behrman is the author of Electroboy: A Memoir of Mania. (Read more…)

At first, Andy Behrman’s manic episodes gave him an edge among the young professional elite of 1980s New York City: thousands of ideas tumbled out of his super-charged brain and he slept only a couple of hours a night, leaving him plenty of time to pursue them all. Soon, though, the dizzying highs and crushing lows of his undiagnosed bipolar disorder grew too strong, and Andy’s life spun out of control. He developed a taste for drugs, quick money and risky sex. He grew delusional and grandiose, spending thousands of dollars on impulsive trips around the world and luxury goods. His mania-fueled joyride ended in a federal court, an accused embezzler and forger of modern art.

It took almost 20 rounds of electroconvulsive therapy to bring some degree of normalcy to Andy’s life, but his story doesn’t end there. He became a spokesperson for a powerful pharmaceutical company, ultimately betraying his corporate paymasters to become one of their harshest critics.

Big pharma critic, author and mental health advocate Andy Behrman is my guest on this episode of The DisinfoCast.
