‘Smart bra’ detects breast cancer years earlier than mammograms

A new “smart bra” currently undergoing clinical trials can detect cell mutations in the breasts up to six years earlier than traditional mammograms, according to the company that made the device.

The so-called “First Warning System” likely saved the life of Nedra Lindsay, a nurse who discovered she had breast cancer nearly 20 years ago, at the age of 24, after she tried out an early prototype of the device before it was in bra-form. Lindsay was featured Monday in a report by CBS Boston, saying the sensors that are now in the bra showed “proof positive that I had cancer.”

It works by repeatedly measuring heat patterns and the shape of a breast over the course of a day, using detailed readings to track tiny changes in temperature caused by the growth of blood vessels. The computer in the bra can then compare thousands of data points picked up with its sensors to bioinformatic profiles of cancerous tissues, which the company says enables them to deliver a detection alert with up to 90 percent accuracy.

Because it is so sensitive, the bra can actually detect a breast tumor after it has spent just a few years developing. That’s compared to mammography, usually recommended for women over 40, which usually does not detect such young tumors, leaving doctors to stare at an image of a white mass in search of white spots that could represent dense tissue.

While the company has not yet released its clinical trial data, First Warning Systems hopes to have its bra approved by the Food & Drug Administration and on the market within a year. It will likely require a doctor’s prescription.

Colorado sheriff downplays domestic violence to defend gun ownership

A Colorado sheriff this week attacked legislation to ban domestic abusers from having guns by suggesting the crime could be committed by merely breaking a framed photograph.

At a town hall meeting on Thursday, El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa blasted new gun laws that are expected to be signed by Gov. John Hickenlooper (D), claiming they would be ineffective and unconstitutional. He described a bill that requires people served with a domestic violence protection order to relinquish their guns as ridiculous. (Read more…)

“Now, here is the logic behind this bill,” Maketa said. “Let’s just use the example of a man. A man is arrested because he and his wife got in a domestic dispute. He sees the wedding picture. She says don’t touch that. He takes it and says we’re done anyway and breaks it, and then says I’m leaving the house because it is getting too emotional, we need to calm things down.”

“He is going to jail for criminal mischief,” he continued. “We’re going to let him post bond, which he is still trying to get his hands around what he did wrong. He is going to appear before a judge and be told you cannot go back to the house, you cannot have contact with your spouse, you cannot have contact with your kids, and you need to take all your firearms and ammunition and dispose of them.”

The sheriff claimed the bill was illogical because it would force the man to return to his home to gather his firearms to relinquish them. However, the legislation states the man would only be required to relinquish firearms in his “immediate possession or control.”

At the townhall meeting, Maketa said he would not enforce any new gun laws.

Greyhound bus riders terrorized by roach infestation

Riders on a Greyhound bus bound for New York City were terrorized by an infestation of roaches that started to drop from the ceiling and crawl all over the seats and floor just minutes after the bus left Atlantic City, reported NBC 6 South Florida on Friday.

The bus, which was carrying 48 people and an unknown number of roaches, had to pull over and evacuate en route. A second bus was sent to pick up the passengers, who arrived later at the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Parents tried to calm their screeching children as the roaches poured out of cracks and crevices throughout the bus, passengers told NBC 4 New York.

“All of a sudden the roaches came out of nowhere, they were on the floor, they were falling form the ceiling,” said Andy Rodriguez, one of the passenger.

Greyhound issued an apology and has refunded the trip for all the passengers.

“Once the driver became aware of the situation, the driver followed procedures by pulling the bus over to a safe location and notifying our dispatch office,” Greyhound spokesman Timothy Stokes said.
